Law Enforcement Training Commission (LETC)
The Internal Affairs Investigations Training Program is designed to orient experienced law enforcement officers and related personnel to the unique investigative and legal aspects of conducting internal affairs investigations, both administrative and criminal. This is a very sensitive training. The program provides instruction on the techniques and procedures used in these investigations, both statutorily and constitutionally as we address legal issues that arise when dealing with governmental employees as witnesses and subjects, advanced interviewing techniques useful in integrity investigations, and investigative techniques helpful in obtaining information on the internet. This course is designed and instructed by the best most experienced IA instructors in the business. Fair and impartial investigation, that's our instruction and mission.
Law enforcement officers have a duty to intervene when they have an opportunity to prevent another officer from using unlawful force. That duty comes from multiple sources, including federal constitutional law, a new state statute, and, in some cases, agency policy. But what does the duty require in practice? Is verbal intervention enough, or must the officer attempt to intercede physically? What if the officer has competing obligations, such as keeping control of an unruly scene? And what should an officer do if he or she isn’t sure whether the amount of force another officer is using is appropriate? This post will address how officers and agencies might operationalize the duty to intervene. We answer all the questions and concerns in the training as well as addressing to rising issues of accepting intervention.
This course was designed for individuals who are in the negotiations process in law enforcement, which is everyone. Even an officer on patrol can find himself in a position where these skills are most useful. This training is also for skilled negotiators as well. Come and learn from a Subject Matter Expert with both law enforcement and military pedigree. He will help you to work through some of the most difficult of experiences while learning from you as well. Get the practice you deserve.
