This class focuses on the misconceptions about bias.  This is the heartbeat of bias training, training that is officer supported.  We develop the understanding that biased behavior is our concern, not the fact that individuals have preferences.  We are all about professionalism and encouraging officers to stay in that role, being professional while recognizing how one's biases, if acted upon, can and usually does impact an officers health, career, and freedom.

Legal liability focuses on constitutional law that impacts the actions of officers on the street as well as those who work in detention.  We cover cases that not only points to potential liability, but we also focus on developing an understanding of the practices that infringe upon the professional standards, and how we interact with citizens who free as well as those who are incarcerated.  Do you know what you are doing?  Are you antiquated with the laws that both protect you?  Do you understand that the laws that actually protect you, can be used to bring actions against you.?

This certification has become more important than ever.  If you are paying attention, we are in a phase where mass incarceration and detention is happening.  Under new mandates, agencies like ICE, and CBP, are charged with detaining up to 1500 illegal resident a day.  Where are they going to go?  Chances are, your agency could be impacted with additional detainees which inevitably increases the number of Sexual Harassment and Sexual Assault allegations against your officers and your agency.  Federal Law requires that everyone, responsible for detainment and incarceration, complete this training.  the federal law is called PREA 2003.  The Prison Rape Elimination Act 2003.  And don't let the word 'Prison' mislead you.  This law impacts any and every lockup in the country.

PREA Investigator Certification is one of the most sought after training in Corrections.  Agencies struggle to locate this training and often have to travel across the country to attain it, if they can find it.  We solved this by offering the most comprehensive training in the country.  As with all other train-the-trainer training, your trainers teach the class under our instruction. We will then spend a sufficient amount of time going through the interview process with victims, perpetrators, and witnesses.  For the first time, for many agencies, you will be able to train your own investigators in-house using our content and certification.  This has been a long time coming.  We are already certifying trainers from local, state, and federal agencies.

This is a phenomenal course and a topic that is neglected by many agencies across the country.  It is not just unfortunate that an individual may decide to take their lives, the guilt associated with inaction can be unbearable.  We often miss the signs, I (DPS) did   You grapple with the emotions behind, should I have seen this coming, could I have done more?  People are satiated with the word 'proactive,' this word has become easy to say, but our practices don't always match our words.  This course is all about suicide prevention and the fact that every life is precious.  We all struggle at times, some people work through this successfully, but there are a few that don't.  We have to be actively involved in the mental vulnerabilities that our rank and file faces.  We do this by promoting mentally healthy environments, and we do this by understanding the resources that are available for our colleagues.  The promise for tomorrow is real, lets make sure we all make it there.  Every agency should have certified Suicide Prevention Instructors.
